2019 Hyundai Kona Gets All-Electric Version

Introduced a year ago, this crossover instantly became one of the most interesting models in the class of subcompact crossovers. Considering that the upcoming 2019 Hyundai Kona will represent the second year of production, we would normally expect no bigger changes to see. However, the Korean carmaker thinks differently. So, we are about to see a completely new version, an all-electric Kona. Unfortunately, this version won’t come to the U.S. market so soon. It looks like that the 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric will be available only in Korea and Europe. North American version will come a year later.

As you can see, the biggest novelty for the upcoming year will be 2019 Hyundai Kona electric. We are about to see pretty much the same overall design, though there will still be a few distinctive details. For example, the new version will come without a grille, which seems natural, considering that electric vehicles don’t need fresh air under the hood. According to the latest reports, the new version will come in two variants. A base model will feature a smaller, 39.2-kWh battery pack and a 131-hp electric motor. Such a combination will be enough to provide relatively decent performances and somewhere between 150 and miles of a max range.

2019 Hyundai Kona EVAn optional, higher-grade version will come with a bigger 64-kWh battery pack, and with a potent 198-hp electric motor. Such numbers will provide not just an impressive 250+ miles on a single charge, but also 0-60 time in solid 7.5 seconds.

When it comes to the conventional version with internal-combustion engines, we will see no bigger changes. This seems natural, considering that the model came just a year ago. Expect to see the same, classic four-door crossover design, with 102.4 inches in a wheelbase. In terms of driving quality, this is a well-balanced vehicle. It offers pretty decent off-road performances, but urban conditions are definitely its strongest point. It delivers a fine dose of athleticism. Not exactly at the same level as the Mazda CX-3, but definitely much more than most competitors.

There’s no doubt that the Kona’s exterior design looks amazing, but the interior is fine as well. The cabin looks pretty attractive for sure. Still, keep in mind that this is an affordable, mainstream crossover, so cheap plastics surfaces shouldn’t be taken as a drawback. When it comes to 2019 Hyundai Kona specs, we should definitely mention its cargo capacity, which is more generous than most rivals. You can count 19 cubic feet behind the rear seats, while the overall capacity goes up to 46 cubic feet. Front seats are very comfortable, while the rear bench will be ok for average-sized people. Finally, count on lots of tech features. Even the most basic models come with things like 7-inch touchscreen and smartphone integration. Of course, higher trims bring lots of upgrades.

As we already mentioned, the new electric version won’t come to North America this year. So, the 2019 Hyundai Kona will continue in the same way. North American drivers can count on two units in the offer. The base model comes with a  naturally aspirated 2.0- liter engine, which delivers 147 hp. An optional 1.6-liter turbo inline-four is definitely a better choice. You can count on 175 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to provide 0-60 sprint in less than eight seconds.

In some parts of the world, you can also find a small 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit with around 120 hp, as well as a 1.6-liter diesel engine which is good for about 135 horsepower.
