The 2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept is clear proof that the Ridgeline is about to get a real competitor pretty soon. The German manufacturer presented this unexpected pickup concept recently, as some kind of a preview of the new pickup from VW. Currently, the company has a vehicle of this kind in the offer, but pretty old. So, engineers are working on something new, more up to date. If we look at this concept, it becomes clear that the new model is about to ride on a unibody platform. In practice, this would mean fewer capabilities but significantly more comfort. A real Ridgeline rival. According to the latest reports, production could start sooner than we would expect.
2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept Design
In terms of base design characteristics, the unibody platform is definitely the most important thing about this concept. By looking at the name, it becomes perfectly clear that the new truck will have a lot in common with the Atlas SUV. This crossover came last year, as a completely new model designed especially for the U.S. market. The 2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept rides on the same MQB derivate and we expect the same from the production model. What does this unibody actually mean? The base answer would be to look at the Honda Ridgeline. The Japanese manufacturer is selling similar kind of a truck for more than a decade with a huge success. The current model is in the second generation and offers spectacular comfort and driving experience. Expect something similar.
Will the unibody platform affect towing capabilities?
Definitely yes. The company is doing this on purpose for sure. The 2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept doesn’t offer some spectacular towing ratings, but on the other side offers a high level of comfort and crossover-like cabin, full of soft-touch materials, tech features etc. Most likely, a max towing capacity will go somewhere around 5.000 pounds.
2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept Styling
The 2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept comes with lots of very unique details. The first thing you’ll notice are all those LED lighting groups that go all around headlights, grille, fog lights etc. Also, there is a large “Atlas” lettering at front. Production model probably won’t feature such futuristics approach. Most likely, we are about to see the same design language as on the Atlas SUV. Two models will feature pretty much identical front end. Same goes to the interior design. Expect to see a familiar cabin layout, with the same dashboard design, controls, instrument cluster etc. Speaking of the cabin, the new truck will most likely come exclusively in a double cab layout.
2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept Engines
The 2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept comes with a well-known 3.6-liter V6 engine, the same one that powers Atlas SUV. This unit is good for about 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. We expect from the production model to be offered in, at least, one more engine. Once again, look at its SUV sibling. It will be a familiar 2.0-liter turbo inline-four engine, which is good for about 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which also seems like a pretty respectable amount of power.
When will the 2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept enter serial production?
This truck is currently just a concept but latest reports suggest it could hit the market pretty soon, maybe already in next year.
2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept Price
Although the 2019 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept is still waiting for the official confirmation for serial production, it looks pretty much certain that the new model will feature a starting price of around 30.000 dollars.
